Many coworkers in the past have told me that they believe Eclipse to be "pretty much the same" as IntelliJ, but, to counter that point, I've occasionally sat behind a developer using Eclipse who's seemed comparably inefficient (to accomplish roughly the same task), and I haven't experienced this with IntelliJ. I've used IntelliJ for projects that were Java, JSP, HTML/CSS, Javascript, PHP, and Actionscript, and the latest version, 9, has been excellent for all of them. ![]() I'm personally a big IntelliJ fan, but I haven't really tried Eclipse. I know there have been questions like What is your favorite editor/IDE?, but none of them have answered this question: Why spend the money on IntelliJ when Eclipse is free? It is not currently accepting new answers or interactions. This question and its answers are locked because the question is off-topic but has historical significance. My impression is that people who developed VSCode hate Java or at the very least don't want to use it.Locked. I'm sure millions of people got it to work. It also, I think, doesn't support the refactoring that Eclipse has. It supports Java, but I couldn't figure out how. But only for node/TypeScript and related programming. It's great if you love dark theme and hate traditional menu bars. I couldn't find anything IJ could do that Eclipse couldn't, and worse I'd have to research how do I generate getters and setters or sorting them for example. I've tried IJ, it worked and I could tell it does most of what I could do in Eclipse. ![]() I'm color blind and it's hard to see dark gray foreground on black. Sometimes it crawls just to let you know. The newer Eclipses use a language specific server for indexing. I just bought a MyEclipse personal license.
